Wheel Pottery 101: Centering and Shaping Your First Bowl

Wedging the Clay

Before throwing, knead your clay to remove air bubbles. This ensures a uniform consistency and prevents cracking during firing.

Centering the Clay

Secure the clay firmly in the middle of the wheel head. Use your body weight, keeping your elbows locked against your thighs. Push forward and down to center the clay perfectly.

Opening the Vessel

Press your thumbs slowly into the center of the spinning dome of clay. Pull outwards gently to establish the bottom thickness and form the base.

Pulling the Walls

Squeeze the clay gently between your inner and outer hands, slowly lifting upwards to raise the walls and create height. Maintain a steady speed.
